Augmented Reality: The Tech Behind Pokemon Go

Augmented Reality

I have written many blogs but this blog is the only one for which I didn't have to think a lot because the content was always in front of me or to be precise around me. Confused ? You will know whats happening once you read the following lines. This blog is about the technology that is now used by "Pokemon Go". Yes, I am talking about the app that has been the centre of all the attraction throughout the globe. Ever wondered what technology does the app use ? This app uses Augmented Reality. Augmented Reality provides a composite view to us as it superimposes the virtual images with the view of real world.

Though there are many researchers who contributed to this technology but Ivan Sutherland was the first to develop a head mounted AR display at the Harvard University. Augmented reality has revolutionised the world of gaming because today a great many people prefer augmented reality

gaming as it aggrandizes the gaming experience. Main thing is that this tech is not only applicable for entertainment purposes but is also helpful in archaeology (architecture), designing, education, commercial purposes and many more. The defence mechanism of many military organisations related to a country also use augmented reality to map the enemy territory. The Apple Company launched an app that used augmented reality to turn the camera into a mapping device which removes the memory constraints for remembering the directions and roads (it helps me a lot). This technology is used in education purposes because it makes learning very easy as we all know that we learn better what we see than what we read or hear. It makes all the diagrams and structures come alive and more importantly it helps the students to learn practically. Also I have seen in many places that the car designers use headsets and glasses to design the cars and sure it helps them to design dazzling cars. The devices which use Augmented Reality are not very abundantly available in India while it is in full swing in other countries for instance Microsoft’s Holo Lens is a pioneering device in this field.

Though this technology has had far reaching impacts on the technological world, this tech has some cons as well. In the recent past you must have heard many incidents related to the newly released Pokèmon Go as many people playing the game are so much involved in the game that they become unconscious of the surrounding areas and suddenly find themselves in dangerous situations. Most of the time this tech does no harm to people but in some cases it is deadly hence it is very important for the developers to find some solution to these problems or these apps will soon be banned in the respective countries.

Most of you must be thinking that augmented reality is the same as virtual reality but they are not the same things as augmented reality is one step ahead or virtual reality. Virtual reality deals with only virtual world and has nothing to do with the real life experiences. On the other hand, augmented reality combines the fancies of virtual world to the beauty of the real world. Hence, providing an amazing experience. I might have forgot to tell one other application of augmented reality which is really the trend of today's world that is the Snapchat Doggy Filter, well this may serve as bummer for many but many between us find it awesome. So, that is what is augmented reality so next time when you catch Pikachu or stick your tongue out using doggy filter , somewhere in the corner of your mind you will be remembered of the ‘Augmented Reality’.
