Public Speaking

A big Hi to all my dear readers out there! Here I am, back with another interesting and hopefully impactful blog. If you are someone who watches the public debates and end up wondering how can someone be such a natural public speaker (and why others are not), then let me try to enlighten you in your further reading of this blog.

First and foremost to make an impact as a public speaker one must find their own unique voice. If you aspire to be in public life, you need to right away realize that public speaking is an integral part of it. And with constant hard work and a heartful of dedication we can master anything, public speaking is no exception to this rule. Being yourself is the main mantra to become an effective public speaker. There is absolutely no need to pressurize yourself into a particular style of presenting. Say it like it is and how it comes to you naturally.

This is not a task you can master over a single night or during the course of a single talk. You need to take the time to discover your style of presenting yourself and the topic you are going to speak about. Using PowerPoint presentation can help you to enhance the effect of your speech and also draw attention to a point. Make it a point to add more pictures in your presentation as they can convey more in less time.

Public speaking is definitely not reading out a script or a speech. It is all about grabbing the attention of your audience and make them listen to what you are saying. Do not lose eye contact with your audience, whether it is for 500 people in a room or a boardroom table. With experience and experiments, you will learn amazing techniques which will help you to envisage your audience. However, big or small and draw them into your space.

As the quote reads, ‘Practice makes man perfect’. This is true for public speaking also. Rehearse as many times as possible before the actual rendition. Record your rehearsals and point out to the places where you can improvise your tone, postures or diction. Introspect on your strengths and weaknesses and try to overcome them to your best during the rehearsals itself. I also suggest to try out the old adage of practicing your material in front of a mirror with a hairbrush in your hand.

It is very important to represent yourself just the way you are on your social media. Most often when we meet someone in person for the first time we feel strange because of the contradiction in the way they are portrayed in social media and who they actually are. Say it clearly with as less number of words as possible. A strong, straight to the point one liner has more impact than going all round the houses with a meaningless analogy. I hope these tips will help you to become a better speaker! Until my next blog, stay healthy and happy.
